Commemoration concert complimenting the unveiling of a Blue Plaque
marking the home of Oxton born composer Cyril Scott.
2 pm • Saturday 15th June
Birkenhead Priory, Priory Street, Birkenhead, CH41 5JH UK
From the Oxton Society
"Third blue plaque was Cyril Scott, composer, who had lived at The Laurels, 11 Village Road. Permission was being sought from the owners for erection of plaque. Vasily Petrenko, chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, has agreed to unveil the plaque on 15 June, 12.00-1.00. A booklet about Cyril Scott would be prepared by Graham McLean with support from the History Group. The Williamson has plans to dedicate the new window in the Priory to Cyril Scott and would try to synchronise events in connection with that."
The concert will inaugurate the window portrait of Cyril Scott commissioned by the Friends of the Williamson Art Gallery & Wirral Museums (now Williamson & Priory Friends) painted by David Hillhouse and left unfinished when he died in 2013. Members of David’s family will be present at the concert and a brief talk will present the window to attendees.
Liverpool Guitar Society will give a concert in the Birkenhead Priory as part of the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain this year.
Soloists from Liverpool Guitar Society will open the concert by showcasing their talents with pieces from the classical guitar repertoire.
As part of the concert a performance of Oxton-born Cyril Scott’s Sonatina for Guitar will take place.
This piece, commissioned by Andrés Segovia in 1927, was thought lost and only rediscovered as recently as 2001. The programme will feature Richard Harding’s classical guitar quartet arrangement of the piece alongside works written by other English composers.
The concert will take place at 2 pm on Saturday 15th June. Tickets are available from this website: www.liverpoolguitar.org/tickets
